Cross posted from www.nikhilraj.com

I am a regular reader of Malayalam daily “Mathrubhumi”. Recently one thing caught my attention. Have I ever seen their news website appearing on Google when I search for regional(Kerala) news. Ha..! Never..! Have you?

Hmm Have you guys ever seen a regional newspaper’s website appearing when you search for kerala related news. Which one?

I searched for “bus strike Kerala September” and I got this. There are no regional news sites in the result. Click on the image to zoom.

It’s time to take a deeper look into what’s wrong with my study website – Mathrubhumi. Let’s catch something..!

Here is a comparison of search engine traffic for mathrubhumi.com and manoramaonline.com

Yeah! We have some real competition. Hope this report will help Mathrubhumi to achieve better impressions and clicks from Google.

To make things easier, I selected the English version at http://www.mathrubhumi.com/english/

The top menu urls are dynamic. For eg; clicking on the menu link Kerala returned http://www.mathrubhumi.com/english/liststory.php?sub=14 which is not search engine friendly. The url alone doesn’t provide any information to the user or search engines.

It should have been http://www.mathrubhumi.com/english/kerala based on the current site architecture. Anyone will understand what this page will contain by looking at the custom url.

Lets take an individual news post
http://www.mathrubhumi.com/english/story.php?id=128266

The page title tag is Mathrubhumi English – Come clean on US observatory in Kerala, demands Achuthanandan

The most important factors in SEO that has direct impact on rankings on search engine result pages (SERPs) are Title tag and URL.

The title tag can have a length of 69 characters. Search engines will truncate the title tag beyond this limit on their result pages. So the most important keywords should be placed to the extreme left.

The current title tag for news posts is Mathrubhumi English – News Title. Placing the brand name to the left decreases the chance of top rankings for news posts. Thus for news posts the title can be rearranged as News Title | Mathrubhumi English

So for this post title will be Come clean on US observatory in Kerala, demands Achuthanandan | Mathrubhumi English. Even though the title tag has more than 69 characters, only the brand name in the title will be truncated and not the news title. Title tag problem solved!

Now the URL structure. URLs that contain keywords will rank better.

This can also be solved by rewriting the URLs to the form www.mathrubhumi.com/english/NewsTitle-storyid

Thus the SE friendly URL for this post is http://www.mathrubhumi.com/english/come-clean-on-us-observatory-in-kerala-demands-achuthanandan-128266

Why the story id? It is used to tell Google that this is not a static page but an article. This is important for URLs in news websites.

I tried to find out their CMS, but failed!

There is Meta description tag which is a short description of the webpage around 160 characters. Search engines displays it on their result pages. It doesn’t affect rankings but can improve the CTR as search engines will highlight the keywords on the meta description to help the user.

The meta description for this post is mathrubhumi, kerala, news, Come clean on US observatory in Kerala, demands Achuthanandan

Looks ok. But I would recommend using a short summary of the news post as the meta description like the one below:

Come clean on the proposed neutrino observatory coming up in the Kerala’s Idukki district and contiguous Theni in Tamil Nadu, demands Achuthanandan.

Now lets talk about Google News SEO for Mathrubhumi.com.

The content should be fresh and original. We are talking about news here. So speed of delivery/publishing also matters. Hmm, also don’t forget to check your spelling..!

Optimizing images in News posts are also an important factor. The particular post I have mentioned here has no image. Here is one you can use V.S. Achuthanandan’s smiling face!!

The main image should be placed near the News Title. The image should be non-clickable.

The image alt text is a ranking factor. Use it for adding keywords. Also provide a small caption for the image. Google recommends using JPEG images. (Shh..My site has lots of PNG images)

Here is an example from Times of India

The best place to put the date of the news post is between the title and the body.

And now the Most Important Factor to let Google know that Mathrubhumi is a news website is by uploading a News Sitemap. The News Sitemap should be updated each time a new post is published. This can be done using programming/softwares. It also helps the Google bot to know the date of publication. Don’t forget to put the sitemap url in your robots.txt.

Updating the news sitemap frequently helps Google to know about recent posts.

If Mathrubhumi can follow these tips how will they benefit? Ha..Just visit the site man..It’s Adsense! More clicks. More money.

Just being funny! Hope this will help the Mathrubhumi news site to be more SE friendly.

Here is an official video from Google about News SEO.

Also don’t forget social. Lots of sharing activities for news articles happening now. You can implement open graph tags for Facebook.

Now there is a solution. Google in its Webmaster Tools have added "Fetch as Googlebot" in the Diagnostics section. Earlier it was in the Labs section.

With this tool you can submit your new website or updated pages to Google for review. If the submission is successful then the page will be added to Google's index. Googlebot will crawl your website within a day according to Google Webmaster Blog.

How to submit URL to Fetch as Googlebot?

Sign into Webmaster Tools. Go to Diagnostics. You will see the option Fetch as Googlebot. Type the URL to fetch.

After a succesful fetch you will see the option Submit to Index. There are two options. Either you can submit the individual link or the individual link and all the links on that page.

This tool is useful in many ways.

Suppose you posted a content which has some errors or is outdated and Google stores a cache of that erroneous content. Now even after updating you will need to wait some days for Googlebot to crawl that page and to update the cache. You will try to get some backlinks to that page for this to happen faster. Fetch as Googlebot will help to update the Google cache of your website within a day.

Fetch as Googlebot can also be used when you have added new pages to your website or posted upcoming events.

In order to prevent spam the number of individual link submission is limited to 50 per week and URLs with linked pages is limited to 10 per month. So use this tool wisely.
nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com7Kerala, India8.6511947459820249 76.94888838756.4303922459820253 75.6736663875 10.871997245982024 78.2241103875tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-24152439626447014642011-07-21T11:14:00.000-07:002011-07-21T11:14:05.380-07:00Hotel Check In and Check Out in Google
Google has introduced a feature that allows a person to book hotels straight from the SERP. It may be called "Google Hotel Search". This is an improvement in Google Local search.

When searching for hotels in Las Vegas one might see an option for check in and check out.

If you change the dates the prices also change. In the first image the website Bellagio.com shows $179 and in the second image $239.

The feature is provided with the help of some travel websites and some of the best hotels in the city. As more hotels participate in the program, the search will become better.

This will help to reserve hotel rooms with out visiting Tripadvisor or Expedia.

Yes, it is true. After a recent toolbar PageRank update google's PageRank was reduced from 10 to 9 by its own PR algorithm.

This happened after Google became the first website in the history of internet to cross 1 billion unique visitors.
Facebook retained the PageRank 10 award.
For the past few months there are lots of changes happening in Google's search page. The appearance, introduction of +1 button, all these changes are aimed at making search better and improve the quality of search results for the user.

It seems like Google may be busy with changing its PageRank algorithm.
nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com5Kerala, India10.5143884 76.64127128.2935859 75.3660492 12.7351909 77.9164932tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-89689348723881331702011-06-29T13:26:00.000-07:002011-06-29T13:52:47.598-07:00Google+ Social Media Project From Google

With the introduction of Google +1 button in search all were waiting to see what Google is really up to? The +1 button according to Google is "this is pretty cool" or "you should check this out". It is actually a recommendation that any user can make if he finds the result he got using Google search useful. Only thing required for the user is a Google Profile. When a user +1 a search result, his friends will also see it while making the same search.

Google was pushing +1 so hard in the past one month and their effort is showing results. It seems like Google is trying to build a "Social Search Engine" or a "Social Search Network"!!!

Now the wait is over. Google announced a new Social media project called "Google+". It seems like Google is going to revolutionize the concept of social media.

Take a tour of the Google+ features. Some of the features of Google+ are +Circles, +Sparks, +Hangouts, +Mobile.

The key feature is called "+Circles". With this you can create groups based on your interest like Family, Friends, Office and any group name as you wish. What is interesting is you can share your thoughts to any one group or groups you have created. This is something exciting because it is like "real life sharing". In Facebook everything I share can be seen by my Friends and Family. So the +Circles is useful in controlling what I share online. There are so many other exciting features.

Watch out for the next big competition between Facebook and Google. Before any sort of agreement between Facebook and Bing or Blekko or any search engine competitor for a social search media, Google wants to make it clear that they are up for the challenge.

The Google+ project is in field trial and one can join only by invitation. You can join the project.
Few videos have been released.
Even a beginner to SEO should be able to analyze the SERP to know about how the search engines are ranking the websites for a search query. Why the search results differ in each of the search engines.

Then you should check out this feature in Blekko. Blekko an open source like search engine introduced a new SEO game.

Visit Blekko. At the bottom you will see a link to the game called "Play 3 engine monte". When you click it a result page will be seen for a random keyword picked by Blekko. The search result pages are of Google, Bing and Blekko.

Website traffic and its PageRank have a correlation. One might help the other. But not necessarily.
To get high traffic you don’t need a high PageRank and to get high PageRank you don’t need high traffic.

If traffic to my website is high will it improve my PageRank?

Google has not mentioned about traffic when it comes to PageRank. Google PageRank is calculated only on the basis of your backlinks. Please refer my post Google PageRank - Relevancy, Quality and Quantity.

Suppose I have a website www.Example.com. I used the domain name “Example” as my anchor text in my link building campaign and because of my domain popularity I gained a high PageRank of 5. My competitor who has a PageRank of 2 actually has a very good link building strategy and he targeted for some of the main keywords. The result is that he outranks my high PageRank website for those keywords and his overall traffic is much higher compared to my site.

So which is important? PageRank or traffic?

To me Traffic to my website is more important. If I am getting good business why should I care about PageRank? I am sure that my PageRank will improve in the long run.

You might have seen in so many search results that low PageRank websites are above high PageRank sites. This is because of their proper link building.

Stop worrying about that little green bar and worry more about the visitors. Find solutions to improve traffic.
It is named after Larry Page, cofounder of Google. At first it was called Backrub. PageRank is associated only with Google. It is one among the many factors that determines a page’s ranking in the search results. PageRank has an important consideration in SEO.

Google defines PageRank as below (Google Technology)

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. Google's PageRank reflects the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that Google believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have has always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance."

Thus Google considers backlinks as votes.

According to Google, if one page A gives a link to page B, then page A is casting a vote for page B. If page B gets more number of votes from many different pages then the importance of page B will increase. The quality of the page A which casts the vote determines the quality of the vote.

There are two kinds of Google PageRank. One is Google Toolbar PageRank and the other is Google’s internal PageRank. Internal PageRank is updated every day. But it is not accessible. Toolbar PageRank can be seen by anyone. It is updated around two times a year. So clearly the toolbar shows outdated PageRank.

From my analysis there are a few factors that help to improve your PageRank.

Link Relevancy

Link Quality

Link Quantity

Link Relevancy:

Wikipedia defines Relevance as “In information science and information retrieval, relevance denotes how well a retrieved document or set of documents meets the information need of the user.”

This is the main idea behind every search engine algorithms. When a user types a query on the search box the search engines search the web for pages that contain the search query and tries to return the most relevant results at the top. Thus relevancy means the relationship between two quantities, here the search query and the search results.

To explain link relevancy we can try to answer some questions.

If I get a backlink from a PR 10 website will it improve my rankings?

Yes. But there are some things to be kept in mind. Google can analyze for which text I have given the hyperlink to my site, that means my anchor text. If I have a website for health insurance and I got a backlink from a high PR site with the anchor text “Visit my website” it won’t help in getting any boost in search rankings. I have to use my keywords as anchor text and in here “health insurance”.

Suppose my health insurance website has a PR of 10. Will it come in search results for every search query?

No. This is also because of anchor text. I targeted only for those keywords which people might use to reach my website. For those keywords my site will be the top result.

Now suppose I have a website selling flowers and I got a backlink from a high PR website which sells electronic circuit boards. Do you think it is relevant to get my backlink there?

Google knows that “flowers” is not any way related to “electronic circuit boards”. So regardless of the high PR backlink I got Google considers the relation (Relevance) between the two websites and it finds nothing and my backlink has no value.

As I have explained, Google will try to determine my website’s PageRank based on the high PR sites from where I get backlinks. It can also perform hyperlink text analysis to calculate how relevant my anchor text is. And most importantly how relevant is the page from where I got the backlink and my website.
I think now you have got an idea about Link Relevancy.

Link Quality:

Link quality means get your backlink from quality (high PR) websites. But with relevancy added to link quality we can redefine link quality as

“Getting backlinks using keywords of your website as anchor text from relevant sites with high PageRank”.

Link Quantity:

There is also link quantity to be considered. If your PageRank is 3 and you get backlinks from PR 2 or PR 1 websites it won’t reduce your PageRank. But it will help to optimize your anchor text. Even though backlinks from sites with low PR than your site will not improve your PR, it will help to bring more visitors to your site.

Not every backlink to your page is counted by Google. Google can filter links from link farms. Webmasters cannot control which sites link to their sites. So links coming to my site from a site penalized by Google won’t harm my site. But if I give an outbound link to such a site it may cause Google to penalize my site as well. So be careful in your link building campaign.

If you consider Google PageRank in your SEO campaign it will definitely help you rank better in search results.
nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-36994656435492439652011-05-27T09:59:00.000-07:002011-05-27T10:02:06.635-07:00How to add Facebook Like Button to blogger?
Facebook Like button helps to spread a news or information so quickly in web. When you click the like button on an interesting topic then it gets posted on your Facebook profile and if in your Facebook profile you share it, then it gets posted on the newsfeed so that all your friends can read the topic that you “like”d. If your friends also “like” it then it gets posted on their profile also. Ultimately getting more “like”s.

This Like botton is very much useful for bloggers because anyone who wants to share your blog post can simply click the Like button and the post you wrote will get more “like”s from Facebook. This helps in getting more visitors to your blog. SEO can benefit much from Facebook Like button.

How can I add the Facebook Like button to every post in Blogger?
This is very simple. Go to this page you will find all the information you need.
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like

Or you can use the code below.

Go to your blog Design. Click on Edit HTML and select Expand Widget Templates. On the template find <data:post.body/> and immediately after it add the code shown above.

This is an Iframe implementation. There is one more type XFBML.

Things you can customize are shown highlighted red.

For layout you can use standard, box and button. Here I have used box.

Standard Facebook Like Button

Box Count Facebook Like Button

Button Count Facebook Like Button

If you are using standard then you can change show_faces=false to show_faces=true. This displays profile picture. This works only with standard layout.

You can change the width and height to fit your blog. There are two types of colour scheme light and dark. Fonts you can use are arial, verdana.
With developments in SEO, the search engines provided us with some useful search commands / hacks that helps to save time in searching. Some of these search engine hacks are useful SEO tools.

Anyone can search like a “googler” with the following Google hacks.

quotes

cache

site

inurl

intitle

related

+

-

*

quotes

When the search term (word or phrase) is put in quotes the search engine returns the results which contain the exact term.

cache:

This is the copy of your website in Google. When you search for cache:thedofollowblog.blogspot.com it will return a page like this.

The indication at the top helps to know the last time Googlebot visited your website. The text-only version at the top helps to find out how the search engine sees your website. This is helpful to find out if there is any hidden text or hidden links in the website.

site:

This search query is limited to a website. It returns all the urls in the website. The result for site:makemytrip.com is shown.

This search query helps to know how many pages of your website is indexed in Google.

inurl:

This searches your query in the URL.

inurl:“SEO India” will give results which contain exactly SEO India in the URL.

The search result will contain your query in the title.

intitle:“SEO India” will give result with pages containing SEO India in the title.
The inurl and intitle can be used with site: command.

For example site:somewebsite.com intitle: “keyword” will help to know whether there are multiple pages in your website with the same keyword as title. Then these pages will compete each other for the same keyword. So correction is required for the website.

related:

related:www.seomoz.org will give sites similar to seomoz

This is useful to find out similar websites.

Plus +

Will tell Google to search for exact term. +NYC will give importance to NYC and not New York City. This helps to avoid synonyms in search results.

Minus -

Royal -challengers -Bangalore will return results without challengers and Bangalore. This helps in filtering keywords in your key phrase.

*

Wildcard operator

It helps in replacing several words.

how * Google can be used for searching how to use Google.
I created the meta tags and uploaded it to my template design.

Do you see anything unusual?
Here I used

This is the Meta Title tag.
Actually I should have used

This is the Title tag.

Title and Meta Title tags are different. Title tag is the important one. All search engines display title tag of your website in their SERPs. Like meta keywords the meta title is not important for Google. Meta Title has no effect in SEO.

I removed the Meta Title tag and used Title tag.

Web browsers like Firefox displays your Title tag at the tab portion of the browser. Search engines also highlights the title tag in search results.

This is how my blog appear in search engines

Use Title Tag for your website. It is the actual name for your website. So use it wisely.
nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-46900372296269488152011-05-17T09:48:00.000-07:002011-05-17T10:17:11.886-07:00SEO And SMO
Search Engine Marketing is a kind of internet marketing to improve your website rankings in the search engines for your keywords. Some of the methods are SEO (Search Engine Optimization), PPC (Pay-Per-Click), SMO (Social Media Optimization).

SEO is the techniques used to improve the website rankings in search engines. SEO helps to bring more targeted traffic to your website.

SMO helps to publicize your website through social media.

SEO is very important for online business. Users search for products or services using search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing. The search engines thus help to drive traffic to the websites which offers the product or service searched by the user. The first two or three pages of the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) will be of interest to the user. Thus there is a competition among websites to rank higher in SERPs. By proper SEO your website can rank higher in SERPs and thus get more business.

SMO helps your website publicity using social bookmarking, online communities etc. SMO helps SEO in many ways. Now a days SMO is gaining popularity. People directly search for products and services in Facebook, Twitter and find out what others are saying about the particular website which sells the product. SMO also helps to improve search engine rankings.

Thus SEO and SMO are equally important.
nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-24471532422027083402011-05-10T10:28:00.000-07:002011-05-10T10:55:57.887-07:00PDF submission for SEOPDF submission is very important for SEO. You can create a PDF brochure for your website and promote it. The PDF should be search engine optimized for better results. PDF can be optimized the same way as HTML pages.

There are so many PDF websites available for sharing your PDF file. Search engines can read PDF same way as HTML. These sites are frequently updated and hence search engines crawl these sites more often. Getting a back link here will get your keywords optimized and bring more traffic.

Write your article in MS Word. Use heading tags. The title and article body should contain your keywords. You can place your images and give alt tag. You can give hyperlinks for your keywords.

The PDF should be created in text format. Don’t use Photoshop, since it will create an image file. Search engines cannot read image files. They can read text based PDF. Convert your word document into PDF. This is the first step for starting Search Engine Optimization for your site. If your site is indexed by search engines it will help to bring more traffic.

Suppose that you own a shop. People will visit your shop either seeing it or by your address. But in the world of internet even if you have a website address it may not bring visitors to the site. To get traffic your web address should come up on the search engines for your targeted keywords.

You own a coffee shop (service or your product) and your shop name (website) is Kumar Café. No one will directly type your address and visit unless you are a big brand. This is why Search Engine Optimization is required. Only by SEO your website will rank on search engines for your keyword which in this case is “coffee shop”.

Submitting your website or blog to Google

Google is the king of all search engines. If your site is listed there it means more and more visitors.

Follow these steps

Sign into Google Webmaster Tools

Click on Add A Site

Enter your blog or website URL . Click Continue

Verify your website using the options available. Either you can paste the HTML file provided by Google to the root folder of your website or to the template of your blog just after the first head tag; or use other options.

Finish by clicking Verify

Submitting your website or blog to Yahoo

After Google, Yahoo is the second major search engine.

Sign into Yahoo Site Explorer with yahoo id

Click on submit your site. Paste your URL.

Authenticate your website by putting the HTML file provided by Yahoo into the website template.

There is an option to add your blog feed

Here there is an option which helps to use your default email id, which helps you to use your Gmail id for Site Explorer.

Submitting your website or blog to Bing

Bing is from Microsoft. It is the main competitor for Google.

Visit http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx

Type the captcha and enter your URL

Click on Submit

Now you should write an article related to your site and submit in high Page Rank article sites like Ezinearticles.com and buzzle.com. In the author resource box you can provide your website link. This is really very useful.

Submitting your URL to the search engines may not work some times. By providing your articles to high PR article sites Google will definitely index your site. These article sites are high quality sites and Google index these sites more frequently. If the search engine crawls your website from a link on these sites, then it will help the search engine to categorize your site as a quality site.nikkithekinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09533693530176756819noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1671738433791500753.post-53976127277185414902011-05-02T10:06:00.000-07:002011-05-02T10:18:33.714-07:00Youtube Buys DeliciousWow great news!!

YouTube bought Delicious.

Delicious is the most famous social bookmarking site. Yahoo operated delicious.
